Water agency study pushes agricultural water needs in county

A Santa Barbara County subcommittee on pricing and allocation of state water will submit recommendations next Wednesday. Bob Hunt reports findings to the County Water Agency and says blending high quality Feather River water with existing or reclaimed supplies could enable irrigation for orchard crops, while addressing growth concerns and the economic need of agriculture. The plan bases its sizing on Engineer Manager Charles Lawrance’s countywide needs study, targeting a November 1978 ballot. County Farm Bureau membership has reached 1,090, at 105 percent of the goal.

Tentative map for 11 lot industrial subdivision approved

The County Planning Commission approved a tentative map for an 11 lot industrial subdivision on 14.82 acres owned by Ralph Todd and Carl McMillan north of Buellton and east of Highway 101. Todd plans to move Todd Pipe Supply from Hawthorne to Buellton and attract tenants including a guitar manufacturer. The site, described as ideal by Planning Commissioner Stanley Radom, lies away from residences with lots ranging from 2.08 acres to 31,500 square feet. Approval hinges on County Board of Architectural Review landscaping if needed and long term leases with moving firms.

Presbyterians Win Amended Use Permit for Church and Nursery School

The Santa Ynez Valley Presbyterian Church in Ballard won unanimous approval from the County Planning Commission for an amended conditional use permit to include its existing nursery school and to add parking an entrance road and landscaping of a land addition. The church notes the nursery school already operates under a state permit for up to 60 pupils and has always been part of church operations. The plan also involves a proposed land strip along the south boundary for potential Baseline Ave. extension amid questions of ownership raised by neighbor Anker Johnson. Deputy County Counsel says ownership of the strip is not yet established, and the church has exercised an option to buy the strip after surveys supported ownership. Edward Olivas of the Santa Ynez Mission Band of Indians was appointed to the Santa Ynez Valley Advisory Committee by Supervisor Hedlund and said the reservation clubhouse may be used for meetings.
