Ford vows to end public life by 1977 amid neck pain
New York United Press International reports Vice President Gerald R Ford told People magazine he will quit public life no later than 1977 and not seek the Republican presidential nomination unless a deadlocked convention forces a draft. He cited his wife Bettys neck nerve problem since 1964 and their pact for him to serve in the House until 1977 to protect family health and enjoy retirement. Ford kept a slim opening for a 1976 GOP draft if the nominating process stalls.
