California warned it may not sustain life without long term protections
A blue ribbon Environmental Quality Study Council warned California could be unable to support tolerable human life within decades without a statewide environmental protection strategy. The 17 member panel urged Reagan and the legislature to adopt a cohesive plan addressing population, air quality, land transportation and energy use, and criticized the failed state super agency proposal. The report follows public hearings and calls for bold action and full disclosure of campaign contributions.

State Ag Director Killed in Sacramento Plane Crash
Jerry W. Fielder, 56, state Agriculture Director noted for pesticide control and DDT phaseout programs, died when his light plane crashed during a thunderstorm south of Sacramento. Witnesses saw lightning strike the single engine aircraft as it neared landing at Sacramento Executive Airport, FAA said the cause was under investigation.
