UPI reports February shows a 0.5 percent rise in the cost of living, driven mainly by meat prices which account for about 70 percent of the food index increase. Grocery store food costs jump 1.9 percent while overall food costs rise 1.7 percent, the steepest since March 1958.
President Nixon will reorganize the five member Pay Board following the resignation of George Meany and two AFL-CIO officials. White House says the walkout will not derail the anti inflation program and will inform the Cost of Living Council on future board composition. Meany criticizes administration policies as harming workers while prices rise.
Seven Lompoc City Council hopefuls faced about 150 audience members at First Presbyterian Church for a night of questions on salaries, chamber support, parks concerts, youth and motorcycle issues. Incumbents Benton and Scott argued pay levels align with private industry. Cox and Oneto criticized pay disparities. The event, sponsored by the church and Junior Alpha Club, featured pointed exchanges and concluded with moderator guidance to keep debates among candidates.
U S Ambassador Porter suspended the deadlocked Paris talks in protest at Communist refusal to negotiate. Hanoi delegate Xuan Thuy denounced the move as sabotage while Viet Cong spokesman Ly Van Sau rejected Porter's action and warned of consequences. Porter said the next session would be boycotted and no new date set. He criticized the Communists for using prisoners as blackmail and urged advance readiness to negotiate.
Hawaii quickly ratified the 27th Amendment after Congress passed it. The Senate approved 84 to 8 and the House 354 to 23, with Sen. Birch Bayh predicting rapid state ratification within a year or two as feminists long pursued constitutional equality.
Bomb explosions rocked Carrickfergus and Aughamullan in a fourth day of booby trapped car attacks. In Carrickfergus a 200 pound dynamite blast harmed 12 people after a vague warning. Aughamullan saw a pub destroyed with no injuries. Belfast railway station blast injured 70 and damaged the Europa hotel before a new bomb warning prompted evacuation.
Syrian President Hafez Assad reshuffled his cabinet with Maj. Gen Mustafa Tlas becoming defense minister while Abdel Rahman Khleifawi remained prime minister. In Jordan, King Hussein defended a semiautonomous Palestinian plan amid opposition from Arab states and guerrilla groups. Belfast faced bomb threats and an explosion at a Carrickfergus shopping center injuring 12, with warnings of a second device and evacuations.
Communist forces conducted heavy rocket and mortar assaults in Tay Ninh and the Mekong Delta village of Truc Giang, killing 28 and wounding 29 South Vietnamese. They expanded tanks for the Long Cheng CIA base fight in Laos, destroying fuel and damaging police facilities amid ongoing hostilities. Weather forecasts expect patchy fog with mild temperatures and tidal changes.
