Two US Warplanes Lost Over Laos as Casualties Rise

UPI reports two more American warplanes lost over Laos with two missing crewmen. Guerrilla fire also downed four U S helicopters in Vietnam, killing three Americans and wounding two. An attack killed 18 South Vietnamese civilians and wounded 40 near Saigon. A communiqué notes 6,300 U S troops left Vietnam last week, cutting total to 454,500.

Arrests in Lompoc tool theft case and related burglary

Lompoc police report another arrest in the Beattie Motors burglary with Sgt. Michael Phillip Mueller, 22, at Vandenberg AFB on charges of burglary and grand theft. Three suspects tied to the March 16 theft totaling about $600 were named, with Crawford certified to juvenile court and Bogochow set for a preliminary hearing. Mueller released on own recognizance. In SAUGUS a simulated Old West shootout at Calahan's Ranch injured two children and six adults from live ammunition buckshot. two maltreated performers supplied shells marked blanks.

Lompoc Valley Club elects officers and local notices

John P. Lizarraga was elected president at a Saturday night meeting. New officers include Eugene Huseman as vice president and Donald Chambers as secretary, with H F Beattie Jr Edward Everett S V Inouye and Murray Lester on the board. Also reports pool hours Easter week, Teague luncheon April 3, and various local incidents from vandalism to theft.

Census enumerators to begin April 1 for 1970 Census in area

District Manager Wm. B Collier says householders will have no trouble spotting census workers. Enumerators, mostly women, start rounds April 1 and finish in three to five weeks. Each carries a blue portfolio labeled 1970 Census and a red white and blue official credential. Unauthorized takers should be reported to police or the census office at 124 E. Rosary tonight at 7:30 in Lom poc for Luigi Barbieri 87 died Friday at 216 N E St. Requiem mass at 10 a m tomorrow La Purisima Catholic Church with burial at Lompoc Evergreen Cemetery. He was a retired farmer and resident of Lom poc six years born July 13 1882 in India Italy. Survivors include widow Catterina two sons John Paso Robles and Richard Lompoc three daughters Therese Cancella San Jose Ida Grossi Lompoc Rose Guerra Lompoc eight grandchildren 18 great grandchildren.

Woman killed in Santa Maria crash near Highway 101

A Los Angeles woman, Mary Helen Vermeulen, 49, died on arrival at Marian Hospital after a crash on Highway 101 south of the Santa Maria Way offramp. Her 11 year-old son Peter Jonathon Vermeulen was seriously injured. driver Lynette Pierce and her son Jason Leonard Pierce, both from Los Angeles, suffered minor injuries. The crash occurred at 4:25 p.m. and Vermeulen was ejected. Officers cited the incident per California Highway Patrol.

Funding gaps hit California VA hospitals said by Teague and Cranston

Congressional leaders report California Veterans Administration hospitals face a $5.6 million shortfall this year. The deficit includes $1.3 million for operating expenses and $2.8 million to fill vacancies, with needs also in dental care and private nursing home coverage. They warn for limited drug supplies, prosthetics, sensory aids, and other care.

Boy, 2, killed in fall from airplane

A two year old boy, Jeffery Myers, son of Mr and Mrs Sherman Myers of Seaver, fell 2000 feet from a small plane when the baggage door opened. The body was found Saturday south of Beaver Utah where he had been riding with his father.

Recoilless rifle stolen from Alpine Meadows lodge

The 75 millimeter recoilless rifle on loan from the U S forest service to Alpine Meadows lodge was stolen with four 3 inch diameter shells. Footprints in snow indicate two or three suspects pried the weapon from its cement base at Sierra ski resort in Place County. The rifle can puncture a bank vault or armor a tank according to sheriff deputies.

Army Captain Gillham Promoted Amid Vietnam Service

Bruce T. Gillham son of Mr and Mrs Robert A Gillham 4036 Riger Lompoc was promoted to Army captain with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam He is an aviator in the 163d Aviation Company and holds the Bronze Star Medal Army Commendation Medal Vietnamese Gallantry Cross and Air Medal He entered service in March 1967 a 23 year old graduate of Lompoc High School and attended San Jose State College Moscow reports a new series of Soviet test rocket firings in the northern Pacific warning ships and aircraft to keep distance from the target area centered near latitude 35 43 north longitude 172 38 west.
