Valley Riders open 1974 season with first show and gymkhana

The Lompoc Valley Riders launched the 1974 riding season at LaSalle Canyon Arena with a members only Horse Show and Gymkhana directed by Ruth Jones and Barbara Pinx. The event drew 241 entries with high point show winners including Sherry Dyer Teresa Pico and Sue Robinson and gymkhana winners Kathy Wilson Cheryn Pettit and Eileen Dyer.

Teeth Reveal Hidden Lead Exposure in Children

Researchers in Philadelphia analyzed lead levels in 761 first grade children by testing shed baby teeth. They found higher lead in teeth from District 5 areas near deteriorating homes and a lead processing site, with white children sometimes showing elevated levels despite better housing. The study supports teeth as a retrospective marker for early lead exposure and its impact on development.

Allan Hancock College official named Woman of the Year

Mrs. Jo Cavanaugh Director of Health Occupations at Allan Hancock College was named Woman of the Year by the California Industrial Education Association at its conference in Bakersfield March 4 through 9. The 5,000 member organization also selects a Man of the Year each year.
