Bay Area Sees Rare Snow and Strong Winds Upend Travel
A totally unforeseen storm dumped snow across the San Francisco Bay Area and surrounding counties. In Contra Costa and Marin counties tree limbs broke, knocking out power to about 10,000 PG&E customers as winds ripped a 30-ton hangar door from its frame at Moffett Field. Snow fell on Mount Tamalpais and Mount Diablo while UC Berkeley reported nickel-sized flakes. The storm prompted Highway Patrol advisories and urged drivers to avoid Bay Area hills as forecasters warned of a partly cloudy but unsettled weekend ahead.

Loyalty pledge circulated to avert third party challenge
The White House and Vice President Rockefeller backed a loyalty pledge circulated among Republicans to blunt a potential conservative third party. John Rhodes and Rep. John Anderson spoke at a news conference as 20 Senate Republicans signed the expression of approval for Ford and a pledge to work within the party. The document urges ideological breadth and warns that excluding segments of society would be morally wrong and politically foolish.
