Columbia University students riot over Black Panther aid

Several hundred Columbia University students in New York City demonstrated after the school senate rejected a resolution to provide about 2 million dollars in bail bond money for 12 of 13 Black Panthers jailed on bombing charges. The protest included window breaking and occupation of two campus buildings.

Oil drillings in channel face federal action push

Santa Barbara officials with State Sen Lagomarsino press for a permanent end to oil drilling in the channel while a Reagan administration stance favors termination only after safety measures and adequate containment. Planners reject Buellton sign bid for Andersen's Inn Motel

The County Planning Commission refused to increase sign height or area beyond current rules for Andersen's Inn Motel in Buellton. A 58 foot pole sign and 259 square foot area were rejected as freeway visibility concerns persist. The case will go to the Board of Supervisors on appeal. The redwood motel near East Highway 246 expects 41 rooms at opening and eventual 97 rooms.

Enviromental Expert Gordon MacDonald to Speak at UCSB Dinner

Gordon J. F. MacDonald, UCSB vice chancellor for research and graduate affairs and new member of Nixon's Council on Environmental Quality, will address UCSB Affiliates at 6 30 p.m. Sunday in De La Guerra Commons. His talk is titled Man and His Environment. He serves on the Presidents Science Advisory Committee and Defense Science Board and has chaired NAS atmospheric science committees.

County Planning Actions Light Up Cachuma Area and Parks

County Planning named Fred Lemere of Carpinteria as the committee representative to the reactivated Cachuma Advisory Committee. The body, including county and six water agency members, will monitor updates to the Cachuma Lake recreation plan. Adams reported progress on Goleta County Park pier study with pilings core sampling and deck inspection. An underwater survey will follow to decide on phase two feasibility of lengthening the pier. Wildlife funds may match county and oil royalty aid. Parks Director Adams announced the Cachuma Lake season openings for swimming, horseback riding, miniature golf, and other amusements beginning March 14. Plans for a third Goleta Valley public tennis courts block were approved using open space funds, with possible sites near University Drive and Cathedral Oaks near the Edison substation. Courts will be unlit to avoid homes. John Davis of Lompoc won approval for a summer food and drink concession at Ocean County Park on a trial basis with a portable unit.

Santa Maria Rancher Named to County Fair Board

Gov Ronald Reagan named Albert M Ferini of Santa Maria to the Santa Barbara County Fair Association board. He succeeds George Sousa whose four year term expired. Reappointed were Everett L Brickey of Orcutt and Robert J Shelley of Solvang.

Radiation fouled ducks found at Hanford facility

Four ducks with abnormally high radiation levels were recovered by the Atomic Energy Commission at the Hanford Works in Hanford Washington. The discovery raises concerns about environmental exposure and nuclear facility safety.

Park group seeks end of forest leases for two county parks

The County Park Commission urges the Board of Supervisors to terminate leases with the U S Forest Service so the agency can operate Paradise Park in the Santa Ynez Valley and Alisos Park in the Cuyama Valley. Paradise Park loses about 10 000 dollars annually. Alisos costs around 1 000 dollars to run.
