House panel vetoes 1977 Social Security tax hike

The House Ways and Means Committee rejected any increase in Social Security taxes for fiscal 1977, killing Ford's plan to raise payroll taxes from 5.85 to 6.15 percent. The Senate Finance Committee had made a similar decision earlier. Subcommittee chair Burke and colleagues urged action, while the wage base was set to rise to 16 500 in 1977.

Deputy Fires Shotgun In Van Theft Chase

An 18 year old and a 15 year old were arrested after a high speed pursuit of a stolen van that ended when deputies fired a shotgun round into the radiator. The driver was charged with vehicle theft and assault with a deadly weapon, bail set at 5000 dollars. The juvenile faced vehicle theft charges.

Village water rate hike okayed by commission

The California Public Utilities Commission authorized Park Water Company to raise rates 9.6 percent for about 1,500 customers in its Vandenberg Water division to cover higher power and wage costs while noting electricity costs rose 28 percent and wages 23 percent since the last rate set. The increase reflects $1,220 in federal tax savings and aims to let the company earn a 95 percent return on its investment, with new rates effective March 4.
