Williams Eases to Quick Wins in Triangular Meet

Sprint star Steve Williams eased through an outdoor season opener recording wins in the 100 and 220 at a UCLA Arizona San Diego State triangular meet at Drake Stadium. He clocked 9.3 seconds for the 100 and 20.7 for the 220, with Williams co holder of the world 100 mark of 9.1.

Carol Ann Mann won the S and H Green Stamp Classic by two strokes with a four under par 69. The Texan veteran rose from a possible quit four years ago and overtook Kathy Whitworth who had won the previous week.

Leonard suffers compound leg fracture in California 500 crash

Two-time U S Auto Club champion Joe Leonard sustained a compound fracture of his left leg when his Eagle-Offy slammed into the wall on lap 152 at Ontario Motor Speedway during the California 500. He was reported in satisfactory condition after surgery at San Antonio Community Hospital. the accident left him with facial cuts and an extended recovery ahead.

Soap Box Derby to be held Aug 17 at Derby Downs

Akron Jaycees confirm the 1974 All American Soap Box Derby will run August 17 at Derby Downs. About 100 city applicants will send local winners, and the treasury has reached $40,000 as $200 franchise fees continue, said Rollie Hoover, Derby chairman.

In Santa Monica Pentathlon action the Lompoc Braves placed among 68 entrants in the fresh-soph division with Tom Hicks seventh and Mike Kowalik tenth. In varsity, Mitch Gullikson and Dave Denton finished 17th and 23rd among 40. Hicks earned a second overall in backstroke and freestyle. Kowalik won his heats in back, breast, and freestyle.

Trojans win fourth straight Pac-8 swim title in Seattle

Southern California clinched its fourth consecutive Pacific-8 swimming championship and 12th in 14 years with 430 points. Washington finished second with 346, UCLA third with 342, followed by Oregon 226, Stanford 199, California 125, and Oregon State 76. Washington State did not enter.

Utah freshman Anderson shines at WAC meet

Gary Anderson of Cabrillo High has a strong college debut for Utah. He won the 50 yard freestyle in 21.9 and swam the anchor on the winning 400 medley relay that qualified for the NCAA championships.
