Gunman on rampage kills three men

A chain of shootings near San Bernardino left CHP Officer Larry Wetterling a victim and killed service station attendant Leo Jenkins. Suspect Jerry Youngberg, wounded, was cornered after a high speed chase, with Lt Alfred Stewart and Deputy DA John Hardy also involved in the pursuit. Mayfield and deputies finally stopped the suspect.

The White House said the final three American detainees in China will be released next week. CIA agent John T Downey will be freed after Chou En Lai commuted his sentence and Downey’s mother fell seriously ill in Hartford Connecticut. Navy Lt Cmdr Robert Flynn and Air Force Maj Philip Smith will also be released on separate dates as they had been captured during raids on North Vietnam.

West German Finance Minister Helmut Schmidt said chances for an international solution to the dollar crisis are good as ministers from wealthiest nations wrap up talks in Paris and schedule another meeting late next week to continue discussions.

Reagan says public employees must not strike across California

Governor Ronald Reagan told the California State University system that public employees including professors cannot strike. He argued government must provide services and warned against workers withholding pay or striking. Wayne Bradley countered that threats of strike push for better contracts. Reagan also pressed for a 7.5 percent faculty pay hike as weather outlook called for showers and higher tides through Monday.
