Reagan backs tax plan initiative to voters in California

Governor Ronald Reagan says he has all but given up on legislative approval of his tax limitation program and will take it to the people via an initiative. He told eighth graders he may campaign to qualify the measure for the ballot next fall, noting hopes for signatures despite a split legislature. He recalled signing extradition papers and reflected on his past decision regarding Aaron Mitchell.

Bruington Named Park Chairman in Santa Barbara

Hal D. Bruington, a Santa Barbara building contractor, was named the new chairman of the County Park Commission at the annual Santa Barbara meeting. He succeeds George Burtness who resigned after more than 20 years as chairman. Joe Gray of Santa Maria was named vice-chairman, with Jack Moore of Santa Ynez and Carter Ray of Isla Vista joining as new members-at-large from North County and South Coast respectively.

Agreement hinted to end Wounded Knee standoff

UPI reports a potential settlement between militants at Wounded Knee and federal forces after a night of gunfire that left two Indians wounded. Senator Abourezk said aides informed him an agreement was reached and a cease-fire could be announced, though Justice Department officials had no comment.

Last POWs reach U S soil as airlift ends in week

Fifty five American prisoners of war landed at bases across the continental United States for family reunions completing this week's airlift. A 56th was delayed in Hawaii for fever treatment while awaiting next release details from Saigon. 286 POWs remain in communist camps. next release expected by Wednesday under cease fire terms.

Cease-fire Violations Rise as Saigon Reports Toll

United Press International reports Saigon claims the cease-fire has seen its most violations since it began. The Saigon command says Communist forces violated the truce 147 times from Thursday through midday today, with overall violations at 6,318 and nearly 13,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops killed in that period.

POW Group Expected March 14 In Vietnam Repatriation

UPI reports informed sources expect the third group of American prisoners of war to be released by March 14 though no fixed date is set. Cease fire terms require repatriation by March 28 and U.S. troop withdrawal from South Vietnam to be completed.

Fair through tonight with increasing clouds Saturday and warmer temperatures. Today and Saturday highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s, nights in the mid 30s to mid 40s. Northwest wind 5 to 15 mph. Saturday tides include high tides at 12:57 a.m. and 3:19 p.m. and low tides at 8:41 a.m. and 6:59 p.m.

ABC Sees No Problems With Lompoc Nude Entertainment Rule

California Alcoholic Beverage Control officials expect no issues in Lompoc Valley after a Supreme Court ruling restricting nude entertainment. The ABA says bar owners are warned nude dancing acts and bottomless performances are illegal while topless displays remain legal only on a framed stage. Jim Leitz notes Lompoc poses no problems and only two bars feature topless entertainment elsewhere in Mission Hills or Vandenberg Village after a 1971 injunction was cleared.
