Final shuttle plans outlined for Reagan briefing in Santa Maria

The California Coordinating Committee for the Space Shuttle prepared a briefing for Governor Ronald Reagan at 11 a.m. tomorrow in his Santa Maria office. Fourteen members will depart at 7:30 a.m. by chartered flight from Santa Maria Airport. George Smith will present.

County seeks new population estimate for state aid

County supervisors approve paying 1 750 to the State Department of Finance to prepare a new population estimate as of April 1 1971. The effort could yield up to 20 000 in state subventions based on about 5 per added resident with a 264 000 base and an estimated 4 000 increase since the 1970 census. Higher population may raise sheriff staff costs tied to figures.

Kidnaped airmen freed in Ankara by guerrillas

Four U S airmen captured outside Ankara were released unharmed after five days in captivity. County eyes private emergency services contract in Santa Maria

The Board of Supervisors heard Monday that contracting with private north county hospitals could worsen county finances though centralized emergency services in Santa Maria is seen as beneficial. Assistant AO Paul Floyd urged a two week review to assess impacts and potential contracts with additional private hospitals if Santa Maria proceeds. Valley Hospital of Santa Maria halted emergency services and county counsel says a contract is required if services do not continue.

Santa Barbara police booked five Mexican American youths including brown Berets leader for murder and conspiracy after a shooting near the Santa Barbara Boys Club left Raymond Pugh dead and Richard Bagsby seriously wounded.
