Political contests grow hotter with candidate announcements

W Don MacGillivray announced he will seek re election to the Assembly, while a Malibu businessman enters the Congress race and a Santa Barbara consultant plans to oppose MacGillivray. He supports Reagan tax shifts and opposes campus disruptions. MacGillivray, a former Santa Barbara mayor, was first elected in 1968.

United Tech gets contract for Titan III steering data

Martin Marietta awarded United Technology Center a contract to provide performance data for an advanced steering system for Titan II boosters now planned for Titan III configurations in the 1970s. UTC tested the system in January at Coyote California and more tests will follow as NASA and DoD prepare the Titan III Centaur and Viking mission schedule. Harold Keith of Malibu announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in the 13th Congressional District opposing incumbent Charles M Teague. Kenneth A Palmer of Santa Barbara is expected to seek the Democratic nomination for the 36th Assembly District with a news conference and lunch in Santa Maria planned.

Lompoc Student Mark Chambers Chosen for AFS Summer Program

Mark Chambers a Lompoc High School junior and son of Don and Mrs. Chambers has been selected for the American Field Service Americans Abroad summer program in New York. He will depart for a summer residence between June 13 and July and return in early September for the fall term. He is the first Lompoc candidate chosen for the program. Leigh Moulton, daughter of Bernard and Mrs. Moulton, also advanced as a finalist for year long overseas programs, with about 70 percent of finalists typically selected depending on home and school availability.

Electric rocket engine endurance test on SEAT 2

An in orbit endurance run began February 14 on an electron bombardment ion engine aboard NASA SEAT 2. NASA Lewis Research Center manages the SERT project as the six month test measures thrust around six milli pounds and a 60 mile orbital rise. SERT 2 launched February 3 from Vandenberg Air Force Base, with early results confirming vacuum chamber tests of prior ion engines.
