Senate approves hike in minimum wage to 2.20
The Senate approved by 69 to 22 a bill to raise the hourly minimum to 2.20 and include almost seven million more workers under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The plan phases in raises over three years for farmworkers and a five year overtime protection expansion for police and firemen.

GM slashes shifts as auto slump deepens in 1974
Detroit based General Motors announces elimination of second shifts at three assembly plants and ongoing week long shutdowns at others to reduce inventory of large cars. The cutbacks follow a 34 percent sales drop in early 1974 and surpass prior layoffs, with 60 000 workers already laid off. Boy freed after $50,000 ransom paid in New York kidnapping
Eight year old John Calzadilla was released dazed but unharmed in Secaucus New Jersey after his father Michael Calzadilla paid $50,000 in ransom to abductors who had seized him near his Dix Hills home. The boy, reportedly drugged, was recovered with the money the kidnappers escaped with. authorities and the FBI conducted the return to New York City. In a second item, Lewis W.
