White returns to white for courthouse safety stripes
Yellow stripes on stairways at the Santa Barbara County Courthouse were repainted to white after 26 courthouse employees petitioned the Board of Supervisors. Public Works Director Norman Caldwell said an engineer had suggested yellow for visibility but the board preferred the historic white. Also in the county, a clock specialist asked to repair or replace the 40 year old courthouse tower clock mechanism, and a land lease proposal for Calle Real terrain near the jail site was approved in principle with a lease drawn up for county signoff. The New House rehabilitation program reported about a 50 percent success rate in restoring productive life and reducing welfare and drunk arrests.
