Governor Reagan outlined a 1972 growth plan with unemployment easing from 7 percent in 1971 to about 5.8 percent by year end. He cited 1.7 percent jobs gain in December, renewed manufacturing, services and nonaerospace growth, fewer business failures, and population rising to 23.4 million by 1980.
Senate hearings on ITT antitrust settlement bring charges from columnist Jack Anderson and Brit Hume that Richard Kleindienst is unfit to be attorney general. Anderson accuses Mitchell of false statements about ITT convention contributions while Hume cites ITT officials pressuring lobbyist Dita Beard to deny memo authenticity.
An extortionist threatened to blow up four Trans World Airlines jets prompting nationwide searches of passengers, planes, and luggage. A bomb ripped open an empty TWA cockpit in Las Vegas. another was found at Kennedy Airport in New York before detonation. A United Airlines jet contained an inoperable device. Investigators linked devices to a $2 million ransom demand, with details on device types and locations.
Paris reports that Renault workers refused a request by Maoist captors to hold a mass meeting to decide Negrette’s fate. The labor relations director was kidnapped in retaliation for Rene Pierre Overney’s death at the factory gates. CFDT spokesman denied participating in the captors’ game, leaving no clear next move.
Eight Americans were wounded by a guerrilla booby trap near Da Nang as U S patrols engaged in widening air war actions. Two U S jets were downed with two pilots missing while Phantom F4s conducted protective reaction strikes against antiaircraft sites.
A Vandenberg Village woman Gail Ann Wilson 33 and her nine year old daughter Sharon were injured when Wilson’s southbound car on H Street after 830 PM jumped the curb in front of Lions Inn. It rammed three parked vehicles including a rented Rambler and damaged a Buick before stopping behind a beer truck.
Three hopefuls have taken out nomination papers for the Fourth District race with a 5 p.m. Friday filing deadline in Santa Barbara. Incumbent Francis H. Beattie seeks a third term. Fred H. Bock of Johns Manville and Willie M. Harris, a retired Air Force colonel, have also filed, while Beattie is the only candidate to file so far. A separate court challenge questions the 240 filing fee as potentially barring lower income contenders from the race.
