City Centennial band may enter Rose Parade

The Lompoc Centennial Committee proposed a combined 100 member Lompoc and Cabrillo High School band to represent the city in the 1974 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena. The group would carry a sign noting Lompoc’s 100th anniversary and fund-raising plans include centennial memberships and sales of commemorative items.

City beautification spreads with new Walnut Ave trees

The Beautification Commission heard that seven Eucalyptus Sideroxylon Rosea trees will be planted on Walnut Ave with private funding for those near the La Purisima Building. The project follows a city hall design by Al Autry and includes private funding for the Record Building frontage.

Lettuce boycott spreads in Santa Maria fields

The United Farm Workers Organizing Committee began a lettuce thinning boycott in Santa Maria fields under Cescar Chavez and Pete Velasco. Car caravans will urge workers to quit the fields to support the broader lettuce boycott and highlight pesticide Monitor Four risks.
