Federal recession study says downturn deeper than feared
A Federal Reserve and Boston Fed report says the 1975-76 recession is worse than government indicators suggest. It notes a 3 percent January-February drop, 21.7 percent decline since July 1973, and the construction slump with residential and public work down sharply. Dow Jones tops 753 as stock gains mask weakness.

MIT student outlines feasible atomic bomb design
A MIT graduate student, using publicly available information, drafted a design for an actual working bomb in five weeks for a PBS Nova episode. Experts say the plan could work and produce a blast equivalent to 100 tons of TNT, risking mass casualties if material is stolen by terrorists. The program notes security is insufficient to fully prevent theft and discusses implications for public safety.
