Centennial Glimpses of Lompoc Rotary Ladies Night 1927
A vintage Lompoc photo feature recalls Rotary Ladies Night in the old Odd Fellows Hall in 1927 called Boys and Girls Night. Photos list many identified and unknown attendees and note others needing identification for the Record readers to call in. The UPI report shifts to Charles Sullivan a former priest leading CURE, urging voting rights restoration for ex felons. Sullivan, in Texas since leaving the priesthood in 1969, heads a reform group with about 1500 members many prisoners, and campaigns to persuade the Constitutional Convention delegates. He notes prisoners write legislatures but cannot communicate with his group, while public letters from inmates and their families increasingly press lawmakers. He highlights travel bus programs for prisoners’ families, finances living on small stipends, and a push to incorporate prisoner lobbyists once allowed.
