Four airmen kidnapped in Ankara with ransom demanded

Turkish police say Mete Ertekin, 24, is in custody after he drove off in the victims car. four other airmen first class remain at large. The abducted victims include Jimmy Sexton, James Gholson, Larry Heaver, and Richard Caraszi. The Turkish Peoples Liberation Army claims credit for the act and other crimes.

Talks to avert nationwide railroad strike continue at Labor Dept

Negotiations between railroads and the United Transportation Union stalled early but resumed after a government appeal. W. J. Usery Jr met UTU president Charles Luna and negotiator Clyde Lane to head off a strike amid disputes over work rules. The UTU could still strike if unresolved, with unions side and carriers cautious about nationwide action. The White House seeks authority to impose terms or allow selective carrier strikes.

South Vietnam claims 383 Communists killed at Hill 31 Laos

Saigon said its troops killed 383 Communists near Hill 31 in Laos and drove 30 kilometers inside toward Sepone. A spokesman called it a 100 percent victory and cited high allied casualties and a separate Central Highlands battle with 300 plus enemy dead and 14 Vietnamese deaths. Vice President Ky urged more B52 and North Vietnam bombing if the Laos operation succeeds.

Communists boycott talks at Paris peace conference

Communist chief negotiators skip the 105th session in Paris to protest alleged U S threats to attack North Vietnam. U S officials call the move a publicity stunt as Hanoi and Viet Cong leaders miss the meeting and warn the talks may be derailed by military actions in Indochina.

My Lai order not carried out in Calley trial

Witnesses testified Maj. Charles C. Calhoun said a direct order from Lt. Col. Frank A. Barker Jr. urged Medina to spare civilians and homes during the My Lai operation on March 16, 1968. The testimony described countermanding orders from Maj. Gen. Samuel W. Koster and further briefing from Col. Oran K. Henderson regarding civilian checks.

Postmen Return to Work Amid Pay Dispute

Nixon plan for manpower training

President Nixon urged Congress to approve a $2 billion yearly manpower training program tied to revenue sharing. The plan lets states tailor efforts, reduces central control, and targets high unemployment areas when jobless rises above 4.5 percent for three months. California would get about $17 million under the White House breakdown.

Army to Close 38 Nike-Hercules Missile Sites

The Army will shutter 38 Nike-Hercules missile sites in 15 states by June 30 to save about 31 million dollars annually. The announced plan mirrors an Air Force move to reassign units at 18 fighter interceptor bases in 13 states. California sites include Brea Fairfield San Rafael Sausalito and Sausalito Ft. Cronkhite Travis AFB with inactivation of Nike units by June 30, 1971.

Man Arrested After Car Theft And Crash In Lompoc

A 21 year old Lompoc man, James Andrew Ryals, was arrested on grand theft auto and drunken driving charges after allegedly stealing a car from Dixon Beebe Toyota and ramming Perry's Auto Parts at 1138 South F Street. Bail set at 2925 dollars. Ryals was chased by witnesses, tackled by Ralph Vargas, and taken into custody.
