Lompoc Valley Chess Club and Santa Ynez Valley Chess Club announce weekly meetings at Community Building in Lompoc and Baptist Church in Solvang. Fund appeal sent by James Flegge and Bob Wineinger seeks $3 per family per year to support dues and a foundation.
County supervisors review future projects including a $2 million Santa Maria health facility and a $250 thousand remodel of the Santa Barbara Courthouse service wing. Other items target a $500 thousand jail addition, $100 thousand warehouse at Cathedral Oaks, $750 thousand Welfare Administration building, and a central Goleta garage. Administrative Officer Raymond Johnson notes downtown space limits and considers a 30 thousand square foot facility near Juvenile Hall or buying private buildings, with possible borrowing to fund urgent needs.
County officials discussed increasing jail capacity at the Goleta Valley facility opened last year for 348 inmates. A long-range plan could raise capacity to 494 with a 500000 study, as Board members plan a capital outlay session on March 7.
County Supervisor George H. Clyde warns 13 publicly available spaces are inadequate and urges land acquisition or new lots. He notes crowded Planning Commission meetings and proposes relocation of the Welfare Department to free space. A capital outlay study session on March 7 will address an $18,451 annual city off street parking payment.
Four Lompoc men joined the U S Navy under the cache delay and buddy program Gary Charles Neubauer Alan Thomas George David Nell McVicar Richard Alton Nunnelee Bruce Allen Looney and Stephen Bruce Bowen. Bowen enrolled in high school seaman recruit training while Looney attends a service school. Ruben Borjas and Robert E Dennan enlisted in the U S Air Force from this area per MSgt Felix Fusco.
