The writer recalls a halfhearted river trip hindered by gear failure and cold winds before 1956 licenses. The column then observes a long‑standing jeweler sign, muses on Nome weather and Navy woes, and notes civic enthusiasm as the municipal pool opens March 24 with lifeguard training underway.
Robert C. Lilley, Lompoc realty and brokerage business leader, announces candidacy for county supervisor in the fourth district. He is president of the Lompoc Soil Conservation District and City Planning Commission, and serves on the Armed Forces Advisory committee. An incumbent, R. B. McClellan, will retire in June. Lilley says the job is full time and requires district knowledge and broad county experience.
Ted R. Holden announced he will run in the June primary for the county board seat being vacated by R B McClellan who won’t seek a fourth term. Holden, longtime Lompoc resident and former city council member, cites deep valley ties and varied business interests as qualifications.
Miss Patricia Wandler appointed administrator of Lompoc Community Hospital by the hospital district board. She had served as acting administrator since December after Edward Fisher resigned and previously led the nursing staff as superintendent. Wandler was chosen from 62 applicants.
Southland and local agencies seek to trace 14 bounced checks tied to the N. N. Saliba Company once based in Lompoc. Checks issued on a Lompoc bank and ranging from about 30 to over 60 dollars were written after the firm ceased operations in 1990.
Realtors report housing demand in Lompoc nearing full occupancy at the Lompoc Manor development. Three bedroom rentals are nonexistent while Army personnel at the USDB and construction workers swell the market. Small apartments remain scarce and harder to find each day.
County officials and State Board of Equalization reps met in Santa Barbara in May to discuss delaying a blanket property assessment increase for at least a year. They argued the State sample was too small and regional market factors skewed the value to assessment ratio.
A group of property owners in the Lompoc Soil Conservation District began a bid to revive a flood control program for the Rodeo and San Pasqual canyons. The plan could tap up to 300000 in non reimbursable federal money, but no action was taken as owners split on a proposal. An March 8 adjourned meeting will revisit engineering steps if agreement emerges.
The two day Floral Festival will feature a combined children’s and floral parade on June 24. Curt Levens announced the theme Melody in Flowers and Bert Romano will serve as general chairman.
Company C of the 254th Infantry Regiment was activated in Santa Barbara with a guidon presented by Lt. Gen. Young, Sixth Army commander. The ceremony also activated other regiment units in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Lt. Frank Sandell received the guidon as unit commander.
The Cachuma Project gains final Board of Supervisors approval for an operations and maintenance pact. Participating water districts previously signed with the Bureau of Reclamation. Except for the dam, the project will be run by a Cachuma Board of Control with district representatives. The dam remains under Bureau operation until a permanent release contract with Santa Ynez is signed.
Questions and answers prepared to inform voters about the forthcoming school bond and tax election. The column notes tax rates through 1960, the end of a 50 cent override, and forthcoming costs for a new gymnasium and classroom additions to accommodate enrollment growth.
The Board of Supervisors and county city mayors failed to agree on sharing a county wide sales tax and will reconvene after next year’s budgets in the fall. They argued rural residents would bear most of the burden and cities would lose revenue without a county share. Local figures show Santa Barbara County cities collect a fraction of potential receipts under current rules. The county wide tax is effectively dead for another year.
Maxine Howerton a junior at Lompoc High School will reign as queen of the Lom poc Relays set for March 17 Her attendants are Rosbel Scolari Carol Hilderbrand Jeannie Plo and Linda Sickels They will present awards to winning teams and individuals continuing a pre World War II tradition.
In Washington Congress leader Carl Vinson won a year pause for the Navy to re evaluate plans for a new Lemoore air station and consider Camp Cooke. The Navy cites coastal fogs as a drawback at Camp Cooke while Moffett Field relocation interests surface.
In preparation for the Lompoc Municipal Pool opening on March 24 a refresher Senior Life Saving course is held at the new city pool during evenings and weekends. The program is directed by Mrs June Blakely a certified Red Cross Swimming Instructor with ARC training from Fresno. See Page 2.
