Lompoc Flower Festival opens with Teen Night and parade
The 25th annual Lompoc Flower Festival kicked off with a Teen Night rock concert in Ryan Park followed by a Parade of Flowers tomorrow. Officials predict 100000 spectators for a parade featuring 10 floral floats and more than 20 marching bands and drill teams with prizes totaling $1000 and broader weekend events at Ryan Park and nearby venues.

The forecast calls for overcast nights and mornings with bright inland afternoons through Saturday. Expect highs near 60 at beaches and mid 60s to mid 70s inland, with nights in the 50s and northwest winds 10 to 20 mph. Two servicemen killed in head-on crash near VAF
Two Marines died and a third airman was injured in a two car head-on collision on Lompoc Casmalia Road just north of Vandenberg AFB. Pvt 1C Larry M. King 17 and AIC Gary A. Hoschett 21 died at the Base Hospital. Airman Kenneth G. Creighton 23 suffered concussion and cuts and bruises. admitted for observation. King was visiting his mother in Santa Maria. Hoschett served with the 6596th Instrumentation Group at Vandenberg. Creighton attached to the same unit. Investigators said King pulled out to pass a fire truck and collided with Hoschett head on shortly after 3:40 p.m. Debris covered the roadway as Air Force and Highway Patrol combed the scene.
