Court overturns federal wage rules for government workers

Ford proposes bus desegregation guidelines for courts

President Ford calls for federal legislation to limit court ordered busing to five years and restrict such orders to cases involving illegal racial discrimination. The plan would require judges to measure only the discrimination causing unequal racial balance and asks for a National Community and Education Committee to assist communities seeking voluntary solutions.

Volunteers at Village fire station resign amid budget threats

Volunteers serving County Fire Station 51 in Vandenberg Village have resigned to protest board budget cuts and threats to fire protection. Tom Doolittle, leader of about ten volunteers, said a resignation letter would be mailed to county supervisors today citing four points including potential job losses for 71 regular firefighters and doubts over using volunteers in regular duties. The group warned the state Division of Forestry takeover could worsen protection, despite a state recommendation against it.

Illegal Massachusetts strike ends minutes before deadline

A three day illegal strike by 20,000 Massachusetts state employees ended minutes before a 6 a.m. court deadline that would have cost the union 200000 dollars a day in fines. Union president Howard Doyle said workers would return to work as talks progressed.

Lompoc Flower Festival Hosts Dozens of Booths and Games

The 24th annual Lompoc Valley Flower Festival runs today through Sunday with numerous food and game booths run by local groups. Sponsor lines include Lompoc Youth Football League selling hot dogs and more, Lompoc Filipino-American Club with lum pia, Lompoc Lions selling hot dogs, and many others offering a variety of foods and treats. Game booths feature organizations such as Lompoc Babe Ruth with dime pitch and Xi Omicron Tau-Beta Sigma Phi hoopla. The festival operates daily with hours from 6 to 10 p.m. today, noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, with coastal highs in the 70s to 60s inland and evening tides listed.

California Brush Fires Blacken Large Areas Across State

United Press International reports tinder dry conditions sparked multiple fires across California, burning over 23 000 acres from Point Reyes to the Sierra foothills near Placerville. A 20 000 acre blaze in the Sierra foothills threatened Plymouth while 1 700 acre fires near Conejo Valley were contained. Firefighters, air tankers, and crews from state and federal agencies battled blazes as residents fled and cause remained under investigation.

Flower Festival Opens With Parades and Races At Lompoc Park

Four day event kicks off at Ryan Park with food booths and stage shows led by the West Covina Youth band at 6 30 pm. Runners register at Huyck Stadium for the Lom poc Flower Festival Distance Race with multiple divisions including open six mile and women’s invitational. Saturday features a 10 am parade with six floral floats followed by arts and crafts show and continuous stage entertainment from 1 pm to dusk. Thunderbirds surprise appearance planned at Vandenberg AFB air field Sunday at 12 30 pm.

Jobs measure facing veto by President Ford

President Ford may veto a four billion dollar public works jobs bill over objectionable provisions. Flaherty Named Acting Administrator at Lompoc Hospital

Jane Flaherty was appointed acting administrator of Lompoc District Hospital by the Board yesterday. Effective July 1, she will lead while Ken Wicks, resigning for health reasons, acts as consultant until July 31. The board also approved a $27000 pulmonary function lab and moved to consolidate two hospital board seats with the November general election.
