County Attorneys Seek Substantial Pay Hike in CA Counties

County government attorneys numbering 25 in the district attorney and public defender offices pressed for an immediate substantial pay raise. City Prepares for Flower Festival in Lompoc

City crews and private citizens rush to ready Lompoc for the Flower Festival. Workers repaint curbing and refinish gutters on H Street and Ocean Avenue while gardeners finish park displays at Ryon Park. Officials install flags, set up festival booths, refurbish bandshell, add sanitation facilities, and prepare a special parade parking area west of Ryan Park.

Goleta Supervisors decline referendums on El Capitan Ranch rezoning

County supervisors declined to repeal the El Capitan Ranch rezoning or place it on November ballots. The East Goleta Valley Citizens Assn and Scenic Shoreline Preservation Conference filed the request, which was merely filed. Environmental groups protest a large new residential area in the western Goleta Valley amid ongoing referendum efforts seeking 8 000 valid signatures.

Bid opening set for Route 154 work in Santa Ynez Valley

Bids will be opened in Sacramento on Wednesday June 24 for a four mile two lane highway project on Route 154 between Alta Street Los Olivos and near Route 246. The contract valued in the million range covers new 40 foot pavement with 8 foot shoulders and 12 foot lanes, replacements of dips, better sight distances, and a single crossing with minimal traffic delays. Work starts mid July with 115 working days to complete and a tentative January 1971 finish. A second larger contract extending pavement south to near the Santa Ynez River plus a new bridge raises total cost to about two million dollars with a bid opening on July 22 and mid-summer 1971 completion targeted.

County Weighs Census Recount After City Additions

Supervisor Francis H. Beattie of Lompoc called for a county census recount pending a forthcoming report from county and city planners. He suspects 2,000 inmates at the Federal Correctional Institute were omitted, potentially widening the gap from county estimates. Federal tallies pegged the county at 260,000, about 5,000 below what planners expect.

Meeting screening NET film at Lompoc Library

The Malcolm X organization will screen the NET film What Harvest for the Reaper during a meeting at Lompoc Library on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Nathaniel Davis, club coordinator, reports the event. The Sierra Club potluck set for June 26 is postponed to Friday July 10 with details to follow. Sarah Tait, 17, of 400 Milky Way, Vandenberg Village, was admitted to Vandenberg AFB Hospital for possible injuries after a motorcycle collision with a car driven by Cheryl Berry, 19, of 533 Sunbeam Ave., Vandenberg Village, at Solar Avenue and Milky Way at 5:35 p.m.. Berry uninjured. Burglars stole three transmissions from Perry's auto wrecking yard at 1313 W Laurel Aves, valued at about $115. incident occurred Sunday night, reported Monday. Michael Guerin, 20, of Santa Marta, injured when his car hit a deer on Jalama Road south of Heldacm, treated at Lompoc Hospital then transferred to a Santa hospital.

Paroled 1940s California school killer set for release

Convicted murderer Verlin J. Spencer known as Doc, who killed fellow educators in 1940, won parole and will leave Vacaville Medical Facility Nov 9 to work with a Hawaii ex convict program. He was a model prisoner with minimal security and an active, athletic life behind bars.

Lompoc Planning Commission approves home dental lab use permit

Lompoc planners granted Roy Wahlberg a use permit to run a part time dental ceramic lab at 129 N Orchid St using small portable equipment. The permit runs until July 1 1971. The commission also allowed a church in the C 2 R zone with a use permit and postponed Hazel Allen’s pet supply store question pending more information. A joint meeting date with the county planning commission was rescheduled from July 15 to July 22.

Supreme Court expands rights for suspects in multiple rulings

The Supreme Court strengthens protections for indigent defendants, extending right to counsel to preliminary hearings and custodial interrogations. It rules police need warrants for home searches but grants leeway for car searches, allows six-member juries in some cases, and upholds listing alibi witnesses before trial amid ongoing debates on individual liability of arresting agents.
