SEIU members approve partial county pay pact
A minority of SEIU members agree to an eight percent raise for human services and probation supervisors, effective July 29, after a February two percent bump. The Board of Supervisors will act on social workers and probation supervisors, while 950 members remain unpaid pending mediation next Monday. No retroactive pay, earliest increase possible August 12 if terms are reached. Firefighters may vote on a potential strike, but leaders see it as unlikely.

Brain scanning grows from space tech to map the brain
Scientists at UCLA and Canada repurpose a cadmium telluride sensor from an Air Force space fuel gauging system to a brain scanner. The device uses a rotating x ray source and a CdTe detector to map brain density, detect tumors, and size growths. AFRPL funded earlier development. Hughes Research Labs and TRW Systems Group supplied the sensor and gauging system.
