Blaze Burns Apartments in Lompoc. Arson Probe Underway
A two story Fiesta Apartment complex near Lompoc High School was gutted last night. Three firefighters were treated and released for burns as arson is suspected but not confirmed. The $30 000 to $32 000 loss prompted alarms and extended power outages in the area.

Honeymoon over for motorists as fuel prices seen rising
Oil industry expert Herbert Hugo warns gasoline prices will rise three to five cents by the Fourth of July and shortages may appear by August. He predicts tighter supplies could trigger fuel oil shortages this winter amid high demand and rising operating costs.

Services Friday for Clarence Pop Ruth Veteran educator and archaeologist
Funeral services for Clarence E. Ruth known as Pop Ruth will be Friday at 2 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church Lompoc with burial in Lompoc Cemetery. He died Tuesday at 85 survived by wife Jennie son Ross and two grandchildren. He chaired the La Purisima Mission Fiesta committee and belonged to Elks Rotary Pioneer Society Lompoc Historical Society Lompoc Valley Museum and the Masonic Lodge. Family suggests contributions to Lompoc Valley Museum. Ruth born April 1 1890 in Portsmouth Ohio came west in 1904 lived in Chico and Lompoc, taught till 1948, then Santa Maria, retired 1950. He served on Lompoc Unified School District board after 1960 unification vote and built a home museum for Indian artifacts later donated to the city and museum.

Federal officials warn full Santa Barbara Channel oil drive would add 10 to 21 platforms and 190 to 520 new wells in the outer Continental Shelf. Onshore facilities and pipelines would rise along the South Coast, with up to 111 miles of offshore lines and 165 exploratory wells beyond state three mile limit. The draft environmental impact statement size and scope were set for public hearings July 14 to 16.
