Cosmonauts Complete 18 Day Soyuz 9 Flight to Earth
Russian cosmonauts Vitaly Sevastianov and Adrian Nikolayev returned to earth after nearly 18 days in orbit aboard Soyuz 9. They landed 47 miles west of Karaghanda in Soviet Kazakhstan at 7 59 a m EDT after a 7 day 16 hour 59 minute flight, breaking American endurance records. Recovery teams and officials greeted them amid cheers and medical checks confirmed good health. The mission tested long weightlessness endurance for future space stations and covered about 300 orbits and over 7 million miles. The trip underscored Soviet leadership in space endurance and featured a planned hero’s welcome in Moscow.
