Mail rate hike set for January
The Postal Service plans a possible first class rate increase from 8 to 10 cents next January to cover rising labor costs. Postmaster General Elmer T. Klassen said the increase could be requested in September and may raise about $1 billion annually, mostly for wage hikes. He noted 85 percent of costs are wage related and discussed potential elimination of airmail and costly special deliveries.
