Two Die From Cold After Submarine Trapping

Two men Al Stover of Juno Beach Florida and Clayton Link of Binghamton New York were declared dead after being trapped in a 21 foot Smithsonian submarine 360 feet down off Key West for 31 hours. Menzies and Meek were rescued in good condition as the sub was raised. Temperatures inside the craft fell to 45 degrees and depressurization of the aft compartment was planned to limit tissue rupture.

City considers street tree permit and planting fees

The Beautification Commission unanimously approved a street tree ordinance requiring permits for cutting planting or pruning and authorizing citations. The Parks Department would oversee planting and maintenance with costs possibly borne by abutting property owners when not covered by the Construction Fee Ordinance. A companion resolution sets planting standards while a master street tree plan and inventory await city council action.

Lompoc Schools Benefit From State Judgement Victory

A Los Angeles Superior Court ruling orders the state to pay Lompoc Unified and four Santa Barbara County districts a combined 2.25 million dollars. Lompoc receives 1,766,726, with Santa Maria Joint Union 122,760 and Allan Hancock 68,841 along with Orcutt Union 158,261 and Santa Maria Elementary 138,261. The sum reflects repayments for aid withheld 1965 to 1968 after federal funding objections. The state may appeal within 60 days. further appeals are anticipated.

Skylab astronauts repair charger and recover sun photos

Skylab crew led by Charles Conrad and Paul Weitz completed a flawless spacewalk to fix a broken battery charger with a hammer, removed a telescope obstruction, and retrieved 30 242 historic sun images. Joseph Kerwin monitored systems inside as Russell Schweickart praised the work. The crew report restored systems for the next mission in July.
