Lompoc seeks repeat appeal for jail funding

Lompoc plans to refile a request to the Board of Supervisors to raise county jail funding from 18000 to 60300. If denied, the city will close its jail on South D Street by June 30. The council argues permanent funding is needed for ongoing operations and future court facilities.

Croatian gunmen siege Yugoslav Mission at UN

Three Croatian terrorists forced their way into the Yugoslav Mission to the United Nations in New York, wounding a guard and keeping the building for two hours to press six political demands for Croatian independence. Police and FBI agents eventualy persuaded them to surrender after leaflets were dropped from the windows.

LUSD Board Approves 18 Million Preliminary Budget

Lompoc Unified School District leaders approved an 18 million preliminary general budget despite a large deficit. Superintendent Clarence Bloom said sending the budget to the county is a formality while the board may trim items before final approval in July. A list of 93000 in cuts includes a 78 passenger bus and several maintenance and library items.

Lompoc considers 45 percent trash fee hike at public hearing

A public hearing set for June 21 will review a proposed 45 percent rise in residential waste charges to 4.78 per month for twice weekly pickup plus a 1.47 increase to defray rising equipment and labor costs. State landfill permit work and ECE program applications also feature in the Lompoc agenda.

City Hall funds okayed for federal grant bid in Lompoc

Lompoc City Council authorized staff to file an application for a $1.36 million federal block grant to help finance a $1.95 million civic center at Floresta Park. The 32 hour budget session reviewed an $11.94 million total budget with hikes in utilities, depreciation, personnel costs, and supplies. No action was taken. another session is planned next week.

Goleta crash death of mother and daughter. man jailed

A Goleta woman and her 25 year old daughter died when a car rammed their vehicle as a man chased his ex wife in another car. Their 16 year old daughter was seriously injured. Charles Maupin, 36, is jailed on manslaughter charges. The crash occurred at Old San Marcos and La Ramada roads.

Owners of fox found guilty by court jury

A Vandenberg Village couple was found guilty by a municipal court jury of harboring a fox without a state permit. Frank Arnold Nicholson and Margaret T. Nicholson were convicted after a 30 minute deliberation. Sentencing set for Friday. they plan to appeal citing arrest technicalities and insufficient evidence. Emotions ran high as supporters protested outside the court.
