UCSB Economist Urges California to End Oil Depletion Allowance
Dr Walter Mead urged the California Legislature to remove the state oil depletion allowance arguing it shifts taxes from oil firms to other taxpayers. He testified in Sacramento before the Assembly Revenue and Taxation Committee outlining eight reasons including misallocation, external costs from the Santa Barbara spill, and low tax payments by major oil firms.

Renewed drilling eyed warily by commission
The California Advisory Commission on Marine and Coastal Resources urged a go slow approach to renewed offshore oil drilling in the Santa Barbara Channel. Sen. Robert Lagomarsino said the group opposed immediate adoption of the Presidential panel recommendation and will revisit the issue at its next meeting. The 26 member panel also postponed action on the channel blowout report by Vice Chairman Gordon Lill.
