In Los Angeles a 29 year old man Donn ald Lee Oughton was fatally shot by a policeman after miscommunication and a mistaken threat. Two officers mistook his actions when he approached them, and a rapid back and forth led to the fatal volley.

Military Airlift Command weather forecaster T A Nixon of Detachment 30 6th Weather Wing receives the Bronze Star Medal for outstanding duty while stationed in Thailand. Nixon from Lynn Haven Florida is married to Roberta C Hoker and they have three children Tommy 15 Katrina 10 and Pamela 5. The medal was pinned by Col Joseph M Tyndall commander and staff meteorologist for the Air Force Western Test Range.

Community events line up for Flower Festival season

Light plane bombs Nike site near Van Nuys

An unidentified single engine light plane with a red tail attempted to bomb a U.S. Army Nike missile installation in Van Nuys California. The homemade firebomb fell 250 feet from the base into a ditch outside the fence and a small fire burned out. Eyewitness John MacWhirter described the cannister tumbling end over end with a smoke trail and a puffing explosion on impact.
