Senate subcommittee OKs 111 billion for defense in 1978

The Senate Defense Appropriations panel backs 111 billion for the 1978 military budget, trimming 2.9 billion from Carter’s proposal. It preserves much of the requested weapons mix including five B1 bombers and air launched cruise missiles while cutting fringe items and shifting 14,000 personnel from post exchanges to civilian positions.

Air and Navy to stay in Korea as ground troops withdraw

UPI reports the United States will maintain sizable air and naval forces in and around South Korea while 6,000 ground troops are drawn down over five years. After White House talks with President Carter, Undersecretary Habib and General Brown told Congress the mutual defense treaty remains in effect and a substantial Korea presence will be kept beyond the ground withdrawal.

County approves funds for new multi court building in Lompoc

The county will invite bids for a municipal court complex in Lompoc after Board approval of the 1977 78 budget. Construction could begin in six to eight months with occupancy targeted for June or July 1978. The two story site west of the current building will house court rooms offices and staff.

Split proponents halt drive after 13300 signatures

Officials of a proposed Los Padres County split announced they secured more than 13 300 signatures to place the question on the ballot. They need 11 298 valid signatures and have 60 days to file with the county clerk. Verification will take about three weeks before filing. All signatures come from Fourth and Fifth District residents, led by Santa Maria trucking executive George Smith.

Senate backs new clean air bill amid suppression of weaker standards

Commonwealth leaders from 33 nations endorsed an Anglo American plan for a peaceful shift to black rule in Rhodesia and Namibia while warning armed struggle would likely be necessary.
