Governors urge Nixon to pledge clean government effort

Western governors meeting in Utah called for a Kennedy like space age push to combat pollution and waste. They urged the Nixon administration to take strong federal action on air and water quality, with discussion on redistributing population and curbing solid waste growth.

Indians Arrested in No California Campground Raid

Seven more Indians were arrested Tuesday on trespassing charges at a Pacific Gas and Electric campground in Shasta County. The Pit River Tribe claims ownership of a 3.5 million acre area spanning four counties from Shasta Lake to Lassen Park. Bail was set at 315 for eight of ten arrested earlier, with two minors released on own recognizance.

Airlines face tax bills rejected by California committee

Sacramento UPI reports a Revenue and Taxation Committee rejection of two bills to fund airport planning through a tax on aviation fuel. Assemblymen Ketchum and Badham faced strong opposition from the California Transport Association and major airlines. Airline executives argued the proposed levies are unfair and not easily passed to customers.

Steam bus project under California anti pollution program

Steam Power Systems of San Diego Lear Motors Corp of Reno and SACNAMENTO have signed contracts to develop a steam powered bus for testing in about 15 months. The Assembly Rules Committee's Eugene A. Chappie announced three contracts funded by the Transportation Department to test steam power feasibility for public transit amid pollution concerns. The first contract was with William M. Brobeck & Associates of Berkeley.

UC Davis Senate Votes Against Pre Election Class Break

A majority of UC Davis academic senate opposed closing classes for two weeks before the November election to aid campaign work. The vote 453 to 215 rejected a resolution that would have makeup time in summer or Christmas. A May 13 mail ballot followed a low turnout.

San Quentin coroner's investigator cites attempted swallowing and fishing with a wire hook to retrieve a balloon of narcotics before Rivera's death. The 33 year old from Santa Cruz County faced rape counts and died from an esophageal abscess and a torn balloon, per autopsy findings.

Bomb blast hits New York police HQ after warning

A dynamite time bomb exploded in the New York police headquarters Tuesday night injuring eight people and destroying offices. Police say a telephone warning came 15 minutes before the blast as detectives hunted on the first floor and the second floor bathroom was obliterated.

Manson disrupts court as he argues in Tate LaBianca case

Charles Manson defied Superior Court Judge Malcolm Lucas by turning his back and being removed to a holding cell after insisting he had no part in the proceedings. The judge denied the motion to dismiss the murder charges and to transfer the trial, with a transcript to be prepared for the 35 year old defendant. Meanwhile Robert K Beausoleil sought a new trial in the Hinman murder case, with testimony involving Miss Brunner and Elsie Brunner as part of the proceedings.

Assembly backs death penalty bill for bomb injuries

The Sacramento assembly approved a bill allowing judges to impose the death penalty on those who explode bombs causing serious injuries. The measure, sponsored by Assemblyman W. Craig Biddle, heads to the Senate after the Judiciary Committee rejected Sen. George Moscone's bid to replace the penalty with life imprisonment.
