Welfare department budget gains approval in county hearing
County supervisors approved Welfare Department budgets totaling over 20 million with a net added county cost of about 280 thousand. They cut the purchasing agent by five percent and trimmed the personnel department and public works surveyor budgets by ten and five percent respectively. The County Status of Women Commission received 5 thousand for supplies and staff aid from the administrative officer’s office, while the County Bi Centennial Committee was funded 2.5 thousand. Actions on the County Elections Division were deferred and hearings resume Friday at 9:30 a.m. Officials warn the proposed 100 million budget could require a 1.25 tax levy increase, pushing current rate from 2.78 toward a limit that allows no hike.
