Nixon Hosts Saudi Prince Fahd in Oval Office Talks

President Nixon met for 45 minutes with Prince Fahd of Saudi Arabia in the White House, joined by Henry Kissinger. They discussed expanding U S Saudi economic and technical cooperation and Saudi defense needs as Nixon plans a Middle East swing. Fahd is interior minister and key in oil policy.

Thieu accuses U S of breaking promise over aid to South Vietnam

President Nguyen Van Thieu condemned what he called a broken U.S. pledge to back South Vietnam in the war and urged Washington to honor the January 1973 cease fire. He criticized a U S House vote to cut military aid and did not name the body.

Pauly Promoted. Pentagon Assignment Next for General Pauly

Major General John W. Pauly, commander of the 1st Strategic Aerospace Division, has been nominated for promotion to lieutenant general with assignment as assistant to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon effective July 1. Pauly, a West Point graduate and veteran of 6,000 flight hours, has held key SAC testing and JCS roles, and is married with five children.

AFL-CIO to Challenge Prop 9 in Court

AFL-CIO plans a lawsuit to strike down a Proposition 9 provision barring lobbyists from making or arranging campaign contributions. California Labor Federation official John F. Henning says the reform weakens union influence and violates free speech rights. Prop 9 passed with about 70 percent support.

Ammonia cloud hits Newark school with dozens treated

In Newark New Jersey an ammonia cloud from a brewery demolition damaged a two inch pipe. About 98 students from St. Aloysius School were treated for nausea burning eyes and runny noses with no serious injuries reported. About 170 pupils evacuated to safety as Sister Sheila described unable to see or breathe.

Gubernatorial candidates agree to spending limits

California gubernatorial hopefuls Edmund G. Brown Jr. and Houston Flournoy pledged to cap campaign expenditures under Proposition 9 though the law's key provisions take effect next year. Each would spend about 1.26 million if a final agreement is secured, with Brown coordinating rules and a policing mechanism to enforce any accord. Brown defeated Alioto for the Democratic nomination. Flournoy leads the Republican field with Reinecke defeated.

Millionaire in contempt in extortion trial

San Diego umpteenth UPI report says millionaire businessman C. Arnholt Smith was found in contempt seven times for refusing to answer questions in the Robert Daggett extortion case. Judge Overton adjourned and released Smith until June 13 for further action.
