Sacramento Senate Split Over Antismog Device Moratorium
The Senate endorsed a seven month moratorium on installing antismog devices in five million used cars while defeating a bill to delay the program. Critics feared engine damage. supporters pressed to let the July 1 installation proceed. The board will reconsider if directed. 450000 notice cards go out June 10 for devices due by July 30.

Cold front brings thundershowers and tornadoes across multiple states
A cold front stretched from Michigan to southern Texas triggering thundershowers in the East. Tornadoes were reported in southeast Michigan and near Corpus Christi and west of Galveston. Severe storms caused minor damage, power outages, and some injuries, with cooler conditions settling over the Mississippi Valley and Plains. Temperature readings ranged from 39 degrees in Gallup to 89 in Blythe and Needles.
