New oil slick in Channel may be natural seepage

A four mile long oil slick off Coal Oil Point in the Santa Barbara Channel is believed to be due to natural upwelling from the ocean floor. Coast Guard and state officials planned surveys to assess wildlife risk and potential cleanup actions while oil industry divers prepared to locate the leak.

Skylab astronauts briefed on risky spacewalk plan

Skylab astronauts were briefed on a dangerous spacewalk to free a snagged power wing as NASA ruled out extending the 28 day mission. Commander Charles Conrad and crewmates Joseph Kerwin and Paul Weitz prepared for the handrail repair while a private briefing was held with Christopher Kraft.

Five Injured In Two Car Crashes Near Lompoc

A Lompoc man, Buddy Koerning aged 25, in critical condition after a vehicle plunged off Jalama Road into a canyon and burst into flame. Driver Joe Dennen, 19, survived with cuts and abrasions as Koerning was ejected and later hospitalized. In a separate crash on the Wye intersection, Dr. John Mosby and his wife Marilyn were injured in a collision with a pickup driven by Manuel Silveria, 22. all were taken to Lompoc hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Magruder Tied to Gemstone Stationery Payment in Watergate

Sally Harmony testified that after the June 17 break in G. Gordon Liddy asked for Gemstone stationery bills to be paid. She said she took the bill to Jeb S. Magruder who authorized payment to H. A. Post Associates and signed the charge. The witness discarded the bill in a paper shredder.

LEA Rejects Salary Increase Proposal

Lompoc Education Association and Lompoc Unified School District Board of Trustees failed to reach agreement after rejecting a school board offer of 5.5 percent total raise including 4.5 percent plus 106 in fringe benefits. Negotiations to continue with several points to explore remain ongoing.
