No Car Day Fails as Tokyo Commuters Pack Streets

In Tokyo a government proclaimed no car day mostly cabinet ministers kept the pledge while most people ignored it, filling streets with cars as crowded elevated expressways moved at snail pace. Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka intended to join on foot but security reasons kept him in a car. Deputy Premier Takeo Miki led 18 ministers to use public transit and invited Senator Edmund Muskie to observe.

Tunnell pushes tree burning fixes in county plan

A county board sees ordinance amendments aimed at reducing slash waste by burning in some north county neighborhoods. Lompoc Residents Fight 38 Acre Mobile Home Project

Nearly 300 residents in the northeast section oppose a 38 acre plan between Central and Barton citing property values zoning, traffic and school strain. Roy Wallker leads the group and mobile home tenants seek extensions from attorney William Farber as Mountain View Park residents face eviction. Council also considers a 10 percent electric rate hike and revenue sharing spend.

Supervisors approve underground Buellton project

County supervisors approved an underground utilities project in Buellton to align with state highway widening on Highway 246 and surrounding blocks. The board also postponed a decision on increased community input procedures to July 2, seeking time to review voting powers and staff roles.

Beame and Badillo Set for New York Runoff in Mayor Race

In the Democratic primary Abraham Beame led with 34 percent of 99 percent counted, totaling 263,914 votes. Herman Badillo followed with 29 percent and 222,466 votes, forcing a runoff on June 26 to determine the nominee to succeed Mayor John Lindsay as city leader.
