County still searching for lost sample ballots

County officials continue to probe the loss of as many as 400 sample ballots and voting instruction envelopes intended for Isla Vista and Goleta Valley voters for the primary election. County Clerk J E Lewis said ballots were mailed May 20 and 21 and that some envelopes returned to the dead letter office are under review. The issue sparked complaints and questions about whether Isla Vista residents were omitted from voting materials.

County building officials reported a strong showing by attorney Charles F. Catterlin in the Second District race forcing a runoff with Joe J. Callahan. Callahan led in overall votes with 6,849 while Catterlin had 9,267 and third candidate John Schaaf drew 3,165.

City Beautification Committee to Meet Tomorrow at Noon

Members of the City Beautification Committee will hold a regular meeting tomorrow at noon in the Parks and Recreation Building Anne, 105 S. C St. The meeting is announced this morning. The Tri Counties Blood Bank will be in Lompoc Friday for donors, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Alpha Club, B Street and Ocean Ave. Donors should not eat four hours before donating. The Lompoc Valley American G I Forum will host its Installation of Officers Dinner and Dance Saturday at the Alpha Club with Mexican dinner by Mothers Helping Hands Club. Cocktails 5 to 7 p.m. and dinner at 8 p.m. Admission $5 for the public. John Wichtendahl, 42, of San Jose, injured when the beer-laden tractor-trailer he rode overturned last night.

The House approved raising the national debt ceiling from 373 to 395 billion dollars by a vote of 236 to 127. Lompoc City Council action on land dedication and city services

Lompoc City Council adopted an ordinance for park land dedication and fees, commended former officials, deferred sale of 1.17 acres at the sewer plant, and appointed Dustin Griffith to the Community Action Commission. They commended the Drug Abuse Committee, discussed a joint dispatch service, reviewed Astro Air hearing plans, and ordered actions on auto dismantling yards. The council set a June 14 joint meeting with Santa Maria, sought study on Cachuma Dam spill losses, and moved to use the Lompoc Reservoir for storage. They approved TOPICS coordinator designation, state funds for TOPICS, and a county public services study, while deferring a city street nursery and NASA program talks. Expenditures for Finley B. Laverty on the sewer plant R&D program were approved, and overflow parking space at Vandenberg Motel was authorized. Council bulletins will continue via League of California Cities substitutes.
