Republicans Confront Narrow Assembly Edge Ahead of November

The Republicans hold a slim 40 to 39 edge in the Assembly and a 21 to 19 Senate margin as incumbents win party endorsements in a subdued primary. Notable votes flowed to late Assemblyman Patrick McGee of Van Nuys, who died last week, drawing over 20 000 ballots. Possible fill actions include a GOP replacement in McGee’s seat or a special election by Gov Reagan.

Congressional race drags on in California primaries

In the 24th district of eastern Los Angeles County a tight GOP contest between John H. Rousselot and Bill McColl remained near deadlock with Hillings trailing as special elections paralleled primaries. In Alameda County Dellums defeated Cohelan 42 619 to 35 137 for the Democratic nod. Flournoy and Brown won statewide secretary of state nominations while Younger leads in attorney general GOP race and Alquist faces Reinecke in November.

Woman on party line ignores call in drowning deaths

Mrs. Fred Pino struggled to reach help as three of her children drowned near a pond north of Walsenburg. Two on the party line laughed delaying aid, and a later sheriff said a Colorado law penalizes failure to yield an emergency line.
