Enlistment and civic notes span Santa Barbara duties

Christopher Fryatt, son of Richard Fryatt of Lompoc, enlists in the U S Army for three years with training in Aircraft Maintenance after basic at one of eight centers. Post basic, he will attend five weeks of advanced training at Fort Rucker Alabama. A folk jam at Ryan Memorial Park Sunday from noon to two features calls for participants at RE 3 1722. Vandals damaged 25 junk autos at Perry's Auto Wrecking yard, causing 300 to 400 dollars in damage using large concrete pieces. City council revises drainage ordinance and approves HUD relocation aid resolution tied to an open space purchase along O Street and North Avenue. Sheriff John W. Carpenter announces Chief Laurence R. Marshall named undersheriff. Marshall, Garden Grove chief, age 39, has 15 years in law enforcement and holds a BA in public administration. he is also pursuing a criminology master's at Long Beach. The family includes wife Naomi and four children ages 14, 11, 10 and 9. Marshall aims to start around July 1 in Santa Barbara.

State must decide which shot killed Superior judge

In San Rafael California Judge Harold J Haley was killed by a shotgun blast to the head or a bullet to the chest during a courthouse shootout. Ernest Graves representing Ruchell Magee asked a judge to rule which shot caused the death, a factor in Magee’s possible death sentence. Angela Davis and Magee face murder kidnapping and conspiracy charges tied to the aborted escape and the courtroom violence.

New Pay Hike for County Approved

The county plans a July 5 pay review for about 2400 employees after an ordinance amendment.
