Senate clears way for ACTION agency debut many volunteers

The Senate approved the midnight debut of the ACTION agency to oversee federal volunteer programs including the Peace Corps and VISTA. A resolution to block ACTION failed 54 to 29, House already defeated a similar measure. ACTION will consolidate about a dozen programs and over 21,000 volunteers under executive reorganization rules.

Hanoi cancels return of 13 POWs in Vietnam talks shift

North Vietnam cancels the planned return of 13 sick and wounded POWs from Da Nang to North Vietnam. South Vietnam had offered 570 prisoners but only 13 wished to go home, with Hanoi denouncing the move as a U.S. tactic as peace talks hold firm on withdrawal and Saigon government overthrow conditions. The Upshur ship had carried the prisoners to sea before the decision.

AFL CIO urges immediate $2 minimum wage nationwide

The AFL CIO urged Congress to raise the minimum wage to $2 an hour and extend coverage to all workers. Andrew Biemiller testified before a Senate Labor Committee, contrasting with Labor Secretary Hodgson who warned of adverse economic effects. The current $1.60 rate last rose in 1966 from $1.25. The Nixon administration seeks lower minimums and limited coverage.

Retired General Huntzinger and wife missing in private flight

Maj. Gen. Richard C. Huntzinger and his wife Margaret disappeared on a Calexico to Santa Barbara flight after departing at 3 12 p m Saturday. A large Air Force aided search failed to locate the Cessna 182, with focus shifted to Mt San Gorgonio.

NATO ministers meet as Lisbon bombings disrupt lines

Lisbon rocked by a series of explosions at telecommunication centers and near the national assembly as NATO foreign ministers open a two day session. Ford adopts platinum catalytic converters for California 1974 cars

Ford Motor Co plans platinum catalytic converters on 1974 Ford cars sold in California to meet state emissions rules and may apply the system to all 1975 models. Ford will use exhaust recirculation to curb nox instead, as no national standards exist yet. General Motors and Chrysler had not decided on such devices.
