Syrian armored units and about two thousand troops crossed into eastern Lebanon with up to two hundred tanks in a bid to force surrender from warring factions. The advance lifted sieges on two Christian villages as Israeli observers monitored but did not comment on the intervention.

Favorable Winds Aid Containment of Los Padres Forest Blaze
Firefighters gained on a 12 000 acre Los Padres blaze as favorable winds allowed 1 000 personnel to close a four mile gap and protect twenty miles of line. Two firefighters were injured by falling rocks. one hospitalized. The fire near Junipero Serra Peak threatened ranches and cabins but structures were saved. The fire began Saturday in rugged brushy terrain with tinder dry conditions. Observers noted the Los Padres National Forest spans Monterey to near Los Angeles County, attracting 50 000 to 80 000 visitors on Memorial Day weekend.
