Inflatebird Air Vehicle Fails Military Trial

A 1950s invention, an inflatable 19 foot craft, could be flown after inflation but failed military interest due to vulnerability to bullets. Deflated, it fits a seven foot by thirty inch container, powered by a 42 horsepower engine, reaching up to 70 mph. Three remain in existence but helicopters supplanted the concept.

Welfare job placements surge in California

Welfare job placements rose 108 percent year over year in California, with 19,445 AFDC recipients placed in July 1972 to May 1973 under the WIN program. Overall welfare job placements totaled 51,196, up 116 percent from the prior year, as the state shifts focus from training to direct placement. Dr. Earl Brian said the aim is private sector employment for every eligible welfare recipient.

Protests Delay Santa Barbara Annexation Hearings

Local residents protested Santa Barbara annexation plans for 120-acre Buenemann and Cavalletto properties east of La Cumbre Plaza arguing it would create unincorporated islands. The LAFCO continued public hearings to Aug 23 while Ford Leasing Development and Earl Warren Showgrounds proposals face objections from the 19th District Agricultural District.
