Lagomarsino survey shows broad voter tax preferences

A Tall survey of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties shows 67 percent favor cutting property taxes even if other taxes rise and 52 percent prefer raising the sales tax to offset property tax cuts. Respondents also weigh education tuition and campus violence policies.

Kennedy not likely to divulge Senate decision

reports indicate Senator Edward M. Kennedy plans to retain his Senate seat and return to Washington for the ABM vote. Close friends say he was encouraged by broad public support after asking Massachusetts voters for guidance on resigning. Washington officials deny any decision has been made.

Nixon Visits Vietnam Amid Heavy Fighting Toward US Troop Withdrawals

President Nixon arrived in Saigon as heavy fighting raged outside the city. A 750 troop withdrawal plus 7,300 total pulled from the war marked the U.S. cutback. Nine Americans were killed and ten wounded as South Vietnamese irregulars faced North Vietnamese forces with air and artillery support. B52 bombers struck enemy positions southeast and northeast of Saigon.

National police announced 16 people faced charges for selling forged modern art. The fakes largely used the name of Novella Parigini, a woman painter known for portraits with large startled eyes.

California Legislature Sends Disclosure Bill to Reagan

The California Senate sent to Governor Reagan a financial disclosure bill by Jess Unruh requiring most public officials to reveal investments over ten thousand in regulated businesses. The measure, with penalties for knowingly false disclosure, broadens to candidates 10 days after filing. Eleven prisoners in Belleville share a room after burning mattresses. sheriff Costello refuses to replace them.

Flood tax ends August 31 in California

Governor Reagan terminates the temporary one cent gasoline tax to fund winter flood repairs. The rate rose from seven to eight cents per gallon on June 1 and will expire August 31, having raised about $24 million plus $1.6 million in another disaster fund.
