Senator Gore cites reports doubting Safeguard ABM design

Senator Albert Gore says three Pentagon studies by Aerospace Corp Jason Division IDA and ARPA from 1967 1968 found the Safeguard anti ballistic missile system inadequate for its task. He notes the reports call for many more radars and less exposure than Safeguard plans.

Nixon presses peace call during Saigon visit

President Nixon warned Hanoi and the Viet Cong that the door to peace is closing and urged a response while in Saigon. He met with Thieu and visited troops at a 1st Infantry base, stating this could be one of America's finest hours. Mrs. Nixon toured wounded soldiers at Long Binh.

Tax measure on city utilities fails in assembly

The 14 percent gross revenue tax on municipal utilities was killed by the Assembly Ways and Means Committee. City officials Arthur Scott and Emil Scolari, with W. Don MacGillivray, helped defeat the measure. If enacted the city would have owed about 181000 in taxes. to offset the loss a 57 cent city tax hike was proposed. Pacific Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison supported the measure.

Peace talks rejected at Popes visit

Nigerian Information Minister Anthony Anahoro offered to meet Biafra representatives during Pope Paul VI's Africa visit but rejected formal peace talks on the civil war. The pope urged a cease-fire and possible truce, while Nigeria reported Biafran air attacks near Lagos with no reported damages to Eko Ike.

Biologists begin tests on Apollo 11 Moon samples

Biologists collect blood from astronauts and start injecting lunar dust into germ free mice to test for infectious organisms or toxins. NASA reports Armstrong Collins and Aldrin remain healthy in quarantine as Columbia joins them and moon rocks undergo decontamination and analysis.

Mansfield firm on threat to let income tax surtax die

Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield stood firm against extending the 10 percent income surtax without accompanying tax reforms. He and President Nixon clashed over a five month vs one year extension while August 31 remains administrations’ deadline. Mansfield warned the short-term measure would fail to resolve reform efforts and House Ways and Means continues drafting.

Mariner 6 Begins Second Picture Run Toward Mars Encounter

Mariner 6 started a second series of Mars pictures as it neared a near encounter with the red planet. The first set showed a small egg shaped orb with a bright south polar cap and a mottled gray surface. Scientists hoped to detect atmospheric nitrogen oxygen and hydrogen and possible water while mapping surface features during a 25 minute window of close approach.
