County weighs options to trim general relief funds

County supervisors kept the 1970 71 general relief budget at 247 500 while planning tighter oversight next week. Officials of the United Way will be invited as private agencies plead for continued support. Supervisor Tunnell urged scrutiny of welfare recipients he called young itinerants and hippie seekers of medical unemployability. General relief to single unemployables was explained by Raymond D Johnson.

County board picks to meet SLO officials on water project

County Fair Sets Attendance Record at Santa Barbara

Bob Baker the secretary-manager of the Santa Barbara County Fair said the 1970 event broke all prior attendance marks with 68 243 paid admissions up from 59 509 in 1969. Including seniors and kids day the total visitors exceeded 95 000. A couch fire at 415 B E Airport Ave was started by a discarded cigarette about 4 am and confined to the couch and wall.

Swimming registration opens at Recreation Department

Registration begins Friday at the Recreation Department on South C Street. Slots are allocated by skill level with times from 8 to 9 am for combined swimmers and intermediates, 9 to 10 am for advanced beginners, 10 to 11 am for beginners, 11 am to noon for pre-beginners, and noon to 1 pm for beginners, plus 4 to 5 pm.

Benedict gets five days for second drunk driving offense

Owen C. Benedict, 57, of 224 W. Willow Ave., was sentenced by Judge Terrill F. Cox to a mandatory five-day jail term after conviction of a second drunk driving offense. He also faced a $720 fine and a one-year driving privileges suspension following his arrest last Saturday.
